Westchester Airport Guide

I flew into Westchester County Airport for the first time about five years ago. I was headed to a wedding in Greenwich, and a friend told me to skip JFK and fly into White Plains instead. Best travel advice I’ve gotten in years. I walked off the plane, through the terminal, and into a rental car in maybe 20 minutes. Try doing that at LaGuardia. Westchester Airport has gotten complicated with all the noise flying around about New York-area airports, so here’s my honest take on the place.

Where It Is and How to Get There

The airport sits in Harrison, New York, roughly 33 miles north of Manhattan. If you’re driving, Interstate 684 and the Hutchinson River Parkway both get you there without too much hassle. Public transportation options exist too, though I’ll be honest — most people drive or get a ride. The location is the big selling point. You’re close enough to the city that it’s a legitimate alternative to the major airports, but far enough that you don’t deal with the chaos.

Inside the Terminal

Westchester Airport is small. I don’t mean that as a knock — it’s actually one of its best features. The terminal has dining options, a few cafes and quick-service spots, plus some retail stores for last-minute stuff. Free Wi-Fi works throughout the building. Charging stations are around if your phone is dying. They also have proper accessibility services for passengers with disabilities.

Probably should have led with this, but the size is the whole point. Check-in is fast. Security is fast. You’re not hiking a mile and a half to your gate. I once arrived 45 minutes before a domestic departure and still had time to grab coffee. At JFK that would have been a sprint-and-pray situation.

Airlines and Where They Fly

American Airlines, Delta, and JetBlue all operate out of Westchester. You can get direct flights to popular destinations — Boston, Chicago, Miami, and several others across the U.S. The route options have shifted around over the years, with airlines adding and dropping routes, but the core service to major cities has stayed consistent. For a regional airport, the coverage is solid.

General Aviation and Private Flights

Commercial flights are only part of the picture. Westchester is a busy general aviation airport. Private pilots, charter services, and corporate jets use it regularly. Fixed-base operators like Million Air and Signature Flight Support are on the field offering fuel, hangar space, and maintenance. I’ve seen some impressive private aircraft parked on the ramp there. That’s what makes Westchester endearing in a way — it serves the business traveler grabbing a JetBlue flight to Fort Lauderdale and the corporate executive boarding a Gulfstream, and both experiences work.

Parking and Getting Around

Parking is straightforward. Short-term and long-term lots are available, and there’s a courtesy shuttle running between long-term parking and the terminal. I used the long-term lot on my second trip through and the shuttle came within five minutes. No complaints.

Ground transportation covers all the bases. Taxis line up outside. Uber and Lyft both work here. Rental agencies like Hertz and Avis have counters at the airport. Public buses connect to nearby towns and train stations, which is useful if you’re trying to get to Metro-North for a ride into the city.

Security and Safety

TSA handles screening, same as any commercial airport. The lines are typically much shorter than what you’d face at the big New York airports. The airport also has its own police force and an on-site fire department. Standard stuff, but it’s worth noting that the smaller scale means the security experience is way less stressful. I’ve never waited more than 15 minutes in a TSA line at Westchester, and I’ve been through four or five times now.

Environmental Efforts

The airport has sustainability programs in place — energy-efficient lighting, recycling programs, noise reduction efforts. That last one matters because the airport sits in a residential area, and noise has been a point of discussion between the airport and the surrounding community for years. They seem to be making genuine efforts to address it, which I respect.

What’s Around the Airport

If you’ve got time to kill — or you’re visiting the area — there’s plenty nearby. White Plains has a downtown with good restaurants and shopping. The Rockefeller State Park Preserve is gorgeous for a hike. Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture is one of those places foodies know about, and it’s just a short drive away. Honestly, Westchester County in general is an underrated area. People think of it as a commuter zone, but there’s real stuff to do.

Tips From a Repeat Visitor

Arrive early during holidays and peak travel weekends — the terminal is small and it can feel crowded when multiple flights are boarding around the same time. Use online check-in to save yourself a step. If you’re flying in winter, keep an eye on weather forecasts. Snow and ice can cause delays, same as any Northeast airport. And if you’re debating between Westchester and one of the big NYC airports, my advice is to at least price out the Westchester option. Sometimes the fares are comparable, and the time you save on the ground is worth a lot.

Looking Ahead

Westchester County Airport has expansion and upgrade plans in the pipeline. Terminal improvements, technology upgrades to streamline operations, and capacity increases are all on the table. The goal is to handle more passengers without losing the ease and speed that make the airport appealing in the first place. Given how well the place already runs for its size, I’m optimistic about what’s coming.

Look, Westchester Airport isn’t glamorous. It’s not going to win any architecture awards. But it gets you where you need to go with minimal hassle, and for anyone traveling to or from the New York metro area, that is worth its weight in gold. Every time I fly through, I wonder why more people don’t use it. Maybe it’s better if they don’t — keeps the lines short.
